Meet The Founder & Fiber Artist

Michelle Shaffer, Owner

Michelle’s Haven was created as a place of creativity, comfort, and renewal—where every handmade piece tells a story.

After running a previous shop for several years, I stepped away due to a necessary back surgery. Once healed, I felt called to begin again—this time with a fresh vision and a broader creative scope. Michelle’s Haven was born from that new chapter.

While crochet remains at the heart of my work, this shop has grown into a collection of handcrafted pieces inspired by both tradition and nature. From crocheted accessories and cozy home goods to wire-wrapped jewelry and seasonal creations, each item reflects my love for working with my hands and creating something meaningful.

Crocheting has been part of my life since the late 1970s, when I first learned in a junior high home economics class. Over the years, it has become my form of “zen”—a calming, grounding practice that I carry into every stitch. What began as making pieces for friends and family eventually grew into my first shop in 2016, and now into this new space

Now based in coastal North Carolina, I draw inspiration from the natural beauty around me—incorporating elements like seashells and organic textures into my designs whenever possible. I also enjoy creating whimsical pieces, including amigurumi, often inspired by my granddaughters.

Married since 1985 my husband and I have two children and three granddaughters. We retired in 2021 to Eastern North Carolina near the ocean with our 4 dogs and 2 cats.

Michelle’s Haven is more than a shop—it’s a reflection of resilience, creativity, and the joy of starting again. I’m so glad you’re here.

Where We Are

Jacksonville, North Carolina

Jacksonville, North Carolina, proudly holds the title of 2025 All American City Winner. This prestigious recognition marks the second occasion on which Jacksonville has been honored for effectively conveying its narrative of environmental stewardship concerning the New River. Over the past three decades, the city has undertaken numerous initiatives aimed at restoring the river's health and educating the youth about environmental sustainability. Key programs include the New River Institutes, our esteemed nonprofit partner Sturgeon City, the Clean and Green initiative, the Oyster Highway, and various other impactful projects. Founded in 1752 after a devastating hurricane led to the destruction of the county seat in Johnston, Jacksonville was subsequently re-established and became the seat of Onslow County.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has maintained a significant presence in the area since 1939, with the establishment of the Marine Barracks at New River in 1941, later known as Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base. This base remains operational today and ranks among the five largest military installations in the United States. In addition to its rich history and military significance, Jacksonville is conveniently located near many of North Carolina's renowned beaches. North Topsail Beach, just about a half hour drive away, is a popular destination, while further options include Bear Island, Hammocks Beach, Emerald Isle, and Atlantic Beach, all of which are celebrated for their natural beauty. While my affinity for these locations is personal—having grown up visiting and with family ties in the area—I believe they represent some of the finest beaches in the United States. For further information about Jacksonville and Emerald Isle, you may view their official websites linked below. I consider myself fortunate to reside in this remarkable region.
